Sludge love
The Asian Development Bank has granted the Chinese government a US$66million loan to help China treat about 7 million tons of waste through biogas energy generation. Biogas plants will be built in the rural provinces of Heilongjiang, Henan, Hiangxi and Shandong. The energy needs of 65,200 households will be met with this development, and underprivileged families in these regions will potentially have access to cheaper electricity. The project, completed in 2015, pioneered the use of high-temperature flare technology to reduce methane emissions. Biofertilizer production will be a byproduct created from the biogas sludge. China aims to build 10,000 large-scale biogas plants on livestock farms by 2020.
